Macrossan Street, Port Douglas

What’s the Shopping Like in Port Douglas?

Apart from an amazing ice cream shop, what other shopping options are there for visitors to Port Douglas? Well I’m glad you asked and, fear not, you are very well catered for.

The first thing to know is that Port Douglas is first and foremost a tourist town. If you’re not a tourist you are almost certainly working for a business whose clientele are tourists. And if you’re not a tourist, or a business that sells to tourists, you will be working in a business that supports the businesses that sell to tourists.

So, no hardware stores or mower shops. You get the drift.

What you do get is an amazing choice of places to eat out. Fancy restaurants like Nautilus, Harrisons, 2Fish and Watergate, old classics like Salsa, pubs (the Court House, the Central and Paddy’s pretty much), casual eateries like Rattle & Hum (great pizza’s), coffee shops and takeaways. The inlet end of Macrossan Street and Wharf Street are the places to look.

With your stomach taken care of you can start thinking about all the clothes you need for your stay in the tropics. Clothes and swimwear shops line both sides of Macrossan Street. You can find some excellent mens and womens’ clothes including well known British and US designers, well priced casual wear and a few garish shirt and t-shirt shops (go on, you know you want one). There are some good surf wear shops for the young and hip and a few chain types if that’s your thing.

Add a range of jewellery shops, book shops, knick knacks and a little bit hippy and you have a collection of outlets that will keep you happily browsing for days.

Oh, and the real estate agents. There’s nothing like window shopping for that gorgeous wood-filled, Bali-inspired tropical getaway that we all want. Or even one of the inexpensive little holiday units that fill the Four Mile peninsula.

Oh, oh, and lastly… a very good Coles supermarket and Target Country store for the normal everyday shopping you’re used to doing at home.

The most important thing? Remember where the best ice cream shop in Port Douglas is and come have a delicious gelato for the walk home.
